Yalda Night / Shab-e Chelleh شب چله – شب یلدا

Iranians have celebrated last night of the Autumn for thousands of years. Yalda night (20/21th of December) which is called Shab-e Yalda شب یلدا or Shab-e Chelleh شب چله =night of forty, is the night of Winter Solstice and is one of traditional festivals in Iran which marks as longest and darkest night of the year. Days after the longest night of the year start to get longer which is symbol of the victory of light over darkness.

Yalada meaning birth تولد and it is Syriac سریانی speaking word, which is imported to Persian language.

Many traditions added to Yalda night. These traditions of Shab-e Yalda vary from one province to another one in Iran. For instant, in Ardebil, Engaged men buy fruits, nuts and gifts for their fiancé and then with their family take fruits and gifts to the house of their future bride on the Yalda night. In Esfahan, families set a dinner table (Sufreh سفره ) and place a watermelon on it as a symbol of Sun. In Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, people prepare meals and share it with poor families.

Yalda night is a beautiful excuse for gathering family members together and passing through the longest and darkest night of the year together. During the Yalda night we celebrate with tasty traditional meals such as soups, aash, herbed rice and fish, eating sweets, nuts and fresh or dried fruits such as: pistachio (Pestehپسته), almonds(Badamبادام), walnuts (Gerdu گردو), dries apricots(Qaiceقیسی), prunes(Alooالو), pomegranates (Anaarانار), watermelon (Hendevanehهندوانه ) and figs(Angeer انجیر). Among the fruits pomegranates and watermelon are most significant fruits in Yalda night.

Another beautiful entertaining in Yalda night is Hafez khani حافظ خوانی meaning, reading the poetry by famous Iranian poet Hafez of Shiraz. Before reading poetry we make a wish, pray for the soul of Hafez and then open randomly a page of Hafez poem book. The interpretation of that random poet will reveal meaning of your wish. Also telling old stories by elder members of family is another popular thing to do in this night.

Shab-e Yalda was added to Iran’s List of National Treasures in a special ceremony in 2008.

Happy Yalda شب یلدا مبارک

Hello everyone, my name is Rozina. I am Iranian with Azerbaijani roots. I was raised in Iran but I am living in Scotland. I am passionate about cooking and preparing meals for my family and friends. I tell them the story behind the meal, the pronunciation of their Iranian name and the spices that used in Persian cuisine. I am a photographer, a cooking teacher, and very interested to introduce Persian and Azerbaijani meals, desserts and beverages to people from different cultures, as I love to try food from all over the world. Iranian cuisine is a combination of rice with meat ( chicken, beef, lamb, fish, turkey), nuts, fruits, dried and fresh herbs and vegetables. Iranian food is a celebration of flavor, colour and spices such as: saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, dried rose petals, dried limes, cumin, .... I share my recipes in Farsi/English along with step by step photos of preparation. I take all my own pictures. I have learned my traditional Persian and Azerbaijani recipes from my lovely mother, and she has learned from her mother. Over the years, I have experimented and learned more recipes. Some of my recipes are a fusion Western and Middle Eastern cuisine. Some are forgotten from Persian cooking tables and I try with posting and sharing those ones, to preserve them. All my recipes and pictures are property of rozinaspersiankitchen. I would be pleased if you would mention my site if you wish to use any of them. So, if you are interested to know about Persian /Azerbaijani food taste, you can try my website. I will be glad to hear your ideas about my recipes. :) Thank you for visiting my website.
